Wayne Brockwell-Elvis
and Johnny Cash Tribute Artist
The year was 1968. I was 18 years old. Elvis'
television special was about to be aired. I was glued to the television
set 15 minutes before show-time (I didn't want to miss anything.)
Then, dressed in leather, He appeared with his back to the camera.
He turned and said, "If you are looking for trouble you came to the right place," before
he started his song. I thought that was such a neat way to start
out his show.
Then about the same time, another singer was beginning his own
television show – Johnny Cash, a man who started out with Elvis
at Sun Records.
I thought he was such a great singer. He appeared much like Elvis
- dressed in black with his back to the camera, and he would turn
and say, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash," and then starting singing. Boy
did I like Johnny Cash!!!
I wanted to sing his songs, but, I thought my voice was not low enough.
So, for the next 30 years, I did my best to sing Elvis songs in the
manner of Elvis, and as I became older, I guess my voice deepened.
I sang one of Johnny Cash’s songs at an Elvis fan club meeting, and
received an unexpected thunderous applause.
Next thing you know, more and more people asked me if I would do
some Johnny Cash songs. Then, I was asked to do some more of Johnny’s
songs, and so I put together a Johnny Cash show.
Soon I had a Johnny Cash suit on, with long split tails and a guitar
on my back, and I was turning to the crowd and saying "Hello I'm
Johnny Cash!"
I have always portrayed Johnny Cash in a manner of which I thought
he would approve, and I think I have. Johnny I hope I do you justice." WAYNE
